Heat Warnings

Details
Published: 05 July 2019

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) issues warnings for high heat or humidity that is expected to last at least two days. During this time, heat warning information is updated daily on the EOHU’s website to reflect the current status, and recommendations are provided for how local residents can protect themselves and others from heat illness.

The Medical Officer of Health declares a Heat Warning or Extended Heat Warning based on Environment and Climate Change Canada’s criteria for heat warnings, and in keeping with the provincial Heat Warning and Information System.

DURING HOT WEATHER CONDITIONS

High temperatures can cause many health problems, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. (If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.) During very hot weather, everyone is at risk, but some groups are more vulnerable than others. They include:

Older adults.

Infants and young children.

People with chronic illnesses, such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions or psychiatric illnesses.

People on certain medications.

People who play sports or exercise outdoors.

People who work in the heat.

People who are homeless or who live in sub-standard housing.

Fortunately, heat-related illnesses are preventable.
